Blue-gray Tanager

Thraupis episcopus

When I saw the Blue-gray Tanager for the first time I was realy surprised. With it's blue back and deep cobalt blue wings it is conspicuous. It took me a while to make some nice photos because it was very nervous, quick and did not like to be observed. This common, rather noisy and widespread bird is one of the most familiar ones of Venezuela. I saw several in gardens, city parks, non-forest habitats and plantations. It's foraging behaviour is also very versatile. Hanging down along branches,  it scans foliage and takes a variety of fruit and nectar from flowers. Groups at times and damages fruits in gardens.
