Striated Heron

Butorides striatus

Most of the herons we can find near fresh or salt water. They stand or wait patiently for fish or other aquatic animals. Two species however are regularly found in dry grassy areas. The Whisling Heron and the Capped-Heron I saw on a golfcourt. Imaginable that I was really surprised because both are beautiful conspicuous herons and did not fit at all at the completely withered fairways.
